ABA Play - Phase 1aThe first thing is to establish a good connection with the child. You want, therefore, to make sure that you are well-liked by your child or the child you work with. (This can be your own child, but also the child you work with as a trainer). You want the child to come to you and want things from you. Only when this is the case, can you teach the child. To achieve this, especially with children who cannot yet talk or tell you what they want, you should not ask them questions. This is very difficult for adults, who have the tendency to continually ask children questions. Children who can talk are also very often asked questions which make the adults less attractive to them. Giving instructions is also not allowed at this stage. You should, though, be enthusiastic about the things you offer and about what the child does, saying: wow, well done! what a great drawing! etc. You should be observing the child closely. In this video you will see Penelope who is avoiding adults. I try to find reinforcers but this is not easy. In the next video, you can see how this continues..
