ABA Play - Phase 2Phase two is about rewarding appropriate behavior. However, before I explain further, it is important to understand what I mean by appropriate and inappropriate behavior.
Appropriate behavior = behavior that you want from your child in a certain situation (for example, if your child wants something, he points to it). Inappropriate behavior = behavior you do not want from your child in a certain situation (for example, if your child wants something, he screams).
From the science of applied behavioral analysis, we know that behavior which is followed by a nice consequence will increase. So, the behavior of your child that you give attention to, or which you follow by something nice, will be reinforced. Because you have discovered in phase one what your child likes, you can now, if he does something which you find appropriate, immediately follow it with something nice or fun. He will then do it more often. If your child shows inappropriate behavior, make sure that it brings him no result. In most cases, this means you ignore the behavior. As soon as he shows appropriate behavior, immediately follow it with something nice (reward). | ||||||||||||
