ABA Play - Phase 1bObserve the child. Ask yourself the following questions: what is he looking at, what is he taking, what is he reaching for, what does he want?
If you offer things and activities and take a good look at the child, you can see what he is interested in. You don't need to ask any questions; if you watch, you will get all the information you need.
For example, if you show something or do something (like sing a song) and the child backs away, then you know that he doesn't like it, so stop. If you show something or do something and he looks or reaches for it, then give it to him. By giving him fun, nice things, he will want to play with you and you can teach him something.
Children who avoid adults
Some autistic children prefer to play alone and do not want to be joined by adults or other children. These children will not let you play with them. They will push you away or will walk away themselves. They shout "shut up" or "go away" if you say anything to them.
In this video, you can see that I finally found something Penelope likes!
See how she is doing one year later in this video.
