ABA Play - Phase 3b

• Making signs helps the child to make sounds
• Making signs is more like talking. For every different word, you make another sign. Just like when you talk, you make other mouth movements for each word
• Unlike pictures, you always have your hands with you
• It is faster, you can immediately make a sign whereas you have to look for the right picture
• My experience is that children, even children who cannot or can hardly imitate, can learn simple signs.

The most important thing is to prompt at the right time. The right timing is very difficult. If you prompt badly or reward not only the correct behavior, problems ensue such as a child who tries every sign until he gets the right one. We call this "scrolling". Or your child becomes dependent on the prompts. You can learn how to avoid this at the workshops.
